Rosin Powders
Some applications of rosin require the use of
rosin in the form of powder or dust. Such applications usually intend to improve
grip, increase friction or prevent slipping. There are two quite different types
of rosin powder available for such applications.
- Powdered natural pine rosin
- Synthetic rosin powder
These two
products are completely different in terms of their chemistry and molecular
structure. They only share some physical properties such as grip improvement.
Both natural and synthetic rosin are common ingredients of many adhesives.
Natural Rosin Powder
Natural pine rosin can be ground to
powder; however, the powder particles will soon stick to each other and
form a solid chunk again. To avoid this problem, some anti-caking powder
must be added to natural rosin powder.

The natural rosin powder supplied by
RosinFactory and ChemicalStore contain about 10 to 20 percent magnesium
carbonate (food and pharmaceutical grade) as anti-caking agent. The
Material Safety Datasheet of Powdered
Natural Pine Rosin is available in PDF format. Please review the MSDS before
use.
Synthetic Rosin
Powder
Synthetic rosin powder is a chlorinated
paraffin wax. It melts like natural gum rosin and solidifies in the form of
clear amber chunks. Since the synthetic rosin has a higher softening point, it
can remain in powder form without any anti-caking agent.
Synthetic rosin is mainly used in paints,
coatings, rubber, adhesives, polyolefins, textiles & fabrics. MPROSIN is used
primarily as a flame retardant and shows excellent synergies with antimony
trioxide. Additionally, ancillary improvements in various grades of rubber have
been seen with improvements in both tensile and
tear properties. In polyolefins, MPROSIN is generally recommended for use in
standard grades of low-density polyethylene. In mineral filled polypropylene
composites, MPROSIN has been used as a coupling agent.
MPROSIN is particularly suited for use with alkyd resins. When used in alkyd
resin paints, it offers good gloss and retention, rapid surface drying, good
adhesion and weathering resistance, and excellent water resistance. It is used
in a variety of paint, coatings and adhesives applications, including
chlorinated rubber, non-skid paints, in tumescent flame retardant paints, and as
a low cost resin extender in traffic paints to additionally improve adhesion,
water, oil, gas and chemical resistance. MPROSIN is an excellent halogen source
for flame retarding textiles and fabrics. The products are essentially
non-toxic, provide good durability and stability, and impart water resistance.
MPROSIN is soluble in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated
hydrocarbons and esters. Cloudy solutions are seen when working with petroleum
hydrocarbon solvents at low temperatures, but the films dry clear.
